With summer finally having reached the UK, what more to inspire us than the colour of sunshine! I came across this image the other day, and I just love it. It is sultry and exotic, and speaks of warm weather and an easy-going lifestyle.

I never thought that I was a yellow person, but recently I have been drawn to this colour for interiors schemes. Not bright cadmium yellows, buttery yellows or clear, cool yellows, but more the earthy yellows – mustardy ochres, sludgy orange-yellow-green-browns, or an Indian yellow – bright, clear and warm but not cloying. Yellow is always a warm, sunny, happy colour, used to raise spirits and boost energy. However, it is also an emotional colour, and shouldn’t be used where peace and quiet are essential.

The book is ‘Choosing Colours’ by Kevin McCloud
Here are some interiors that have caught my eye recently, having incorporated yellow into their schemes:

What colours are catching your attention this summer?
“There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.”
Pablo Picasso
“How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun.”
Vincent Van Gogh
“It is the colour closest to light. In its utmost purity it always implies the nature of brightness and has a cheerful, serene, gently stimulating character. Hence, experience teaches us that yellow makes a thoroughly warm and comforting impression.”
Johann Wolfgang Goethe

Another example of your great artistry! The last pic is so… Nordic! Cool and yellow and warm and Swedish? Lucky me to have a yellow sitting room! Love, E
I love your yellow living room Elisabet – a bright and cheerful room, and full of art which is set of wonderfully on the yellow walls.
Hey Nicola
Love this article, because apart from the yellow of the sun (which we don’t see that often), I don’t have much yellow in my life. I do have a gorgeous yellow shirt!
The photograph with the yellow chair is beautiful and shows how easy it is to incorporate colour into a white colour scheme.
I’m gonna be looking out for yellow furnishings and accessories because they brighten up a space and cheer up the mood of the room. Beautiful.
Thank you for sharing this.

Hi Sharon
I’m glad you enjoyed this post. I have the first image pinned to the wall above my computer and it gives me such a warm feeling every time it catches my eye! Good luck with your hunt for yellow furnishings and accessories.
Hi Nicola,
Yes. I am not much of a yellow person either but I love what you’ve done with splashes of it in rooms. Perfect! Especially the lemons which remind me of time at a winery in New Zealand years ago as well as the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Charlene
It’s good to be surrounded by colours that invoke happy memories. New Zealand and the Amalfi Coast – both wonderful!
Personally love the last two images. Subtle use of yellow, almost golden in tone. A beautiful richness…
Thank you Karen – lovely words from a colour expert!
